Synopsis and Pitch

After introducing your book and discussing what you would like to focus on throughout these nine weeks, we will look at your synopsis and pitch, and why working on these elements first can tighten up your writing.

Theme

The theme of your book is the heart of your book. This week we will look at the core lesson you want your readers to take away with them, and the different ways you can incorporate your message throughout your manuscript.

Character Arc

Every character undergoes a journey, and this week we will clarify their transformation and the ways this will be achieved.

Story Arc

Every story goes through similar stages -- a beginning, a middle, an end. This week we will create a story arc template that will ensure your manuscript keeps moving at a brisk pace, with no saggy middles.

Chapter Endings and Pace

How do you know if your chapters are ending in the right place? This week we will look at chapter breaks and how to use pace to keep the tension high.

Scene/Sequel and Conflict

Your character will go through waves of action (scene) and introspection (sequel) and this week we will look at using internal and external conflicts to bridge your scene and sequels seamlessly.

Research and Setting

This week we will look at how to breathe life into your settings using real-world research and the five senses.

Writer's Block and Making Time

Being (and staying) excited about your work in progress is the best way to block writer's block. This week we will look at different ways you can stay in the excitement zone, as well as finding the time to actually write.

Publication and What Now?

Once you have a completed manuscript, you will being the next step toward publication. This week we will look at editing, assessments, agents and publishing options.

We will also introduce the topic of next year's class, term one, and what elements might benefit you most moving forward.
